Bollywood: A Glimpse into the Indian film industry

Bollywood: A Glimpse into the Indian film industry The Indian film industry, being one of the largest cinema centers in the world, is famous for its vibrancy, glamour, and drama. The Bombay city, (now called Mumbai) is important in this context as the birthplace of Bollywood that is the multi-million dollar film industry in India. The word “Bollywood” is derived from Bombay and Hollywood, California i.e. the center of the American film industry. Bollywood, the Hindi language sector of the Indian film industry began in the 1930s and grew into a huge film empire. When it comes to the net worth, the Bollywood cinema (the Hindi language) rules the roost, while there are several other movie making centers across the country distinguished by regional languages such as Marathi cinema, Bengali cinema, Tollywood (Telugu films), and Bhojpuri cinema, to name just a few. India is a gorgeously diverse place where 1.4 billion people share thousands of years of history, speak more than 19,000 native languages, and express culture and life through a spectacular array of food, ceremony, dance, music, faith, and literature.  It is not surprising that a country so immersed in tradition and religion holds storytelling close to its soul, and there is nowhere better than through Bollywood to express it. The history of the Indian film industry is divided into four periods i.e. the early history, the golden age, classic Bollywood, and new Bollywood. During the early history (the 1890s-1940s) in 1896, the first motion picture was shot in India i.e. The Wrestlers. By the 1930s, the Hindi film industry was producing more than 200 films per year. During this period actors such as Prithviraj Kapoor, Paidi Jairaj, Dev Anand, Motilal, and Shantaram have made their mark. During the Golden age of Hindi cinema, from the early 1940s to the 1960s, some of the most critically acclaimed films were produced. The most popular actors in that era were Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, and Dilip Kumar, each with a unique acting style. During the 1960s and 1970s, the movie-making industry was ruled by musical romance films with romantic hero leads. During the classic Bollywood period (the 1970s to 1980s), the Hindi cinema was thematically stagnant and dominated by romantic movies. But with the arrival of screenwriting duo Salim-Javed, the genre of violent, gritty, Bombay underworld crime films was introduced with movies like Zanjeer (1973) and Deewaar (1975). During the 1970s the concept of masala film was introduced which combines several genres such as comedy, action, drama, romance, musical, and melodrama. With multiple genres occurring at the same time, for instance, as you would approach some classical dramatic literature or Shakespeare: sudden thunderstruck true love next to low comedy followed by high drama and history. And, if necessary, there come some sword fights. The new Bollywood Hindi cinema period goes from the 1990s to the present. It was the turning point for the film industry with the addition of a combo of youthfulness, emotional intelligence, family entertainment, and strong melodies, all of which attracted audiences back to the big screen. Some of the most successful celebrities Indian actors in this period are Shahrukh Khan, Amir Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Salman Khan. The actresses include Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, and Preity Zinta. Nowadays, the Indian film industry is a huge enterprise. Over 2000 movies are made each year attracting more than 3.5 billion ticket sales and creating more than U$3 billion in earnings making it the third-largest film industry in the world. Bollywood has produced global superstars, blockbuster movies and remains the fastest-growing entertainment and media market in the world. Bollywood is set to scale even larger as digital technologies infiltrate the population.
